here are some of my photos from a recent shoot for lighting fundamental class. there isn’t a concept; its simply an exploration of the blown-out exposure styles equated with scientific-like specimens.

photographic: sabine bitter/helmut weber
collaborations between sabine bitter and helmut weber often explore the urban geographies that surround us in everyday life, but none prove more successful than live like this! (completed in 2000). one of their first series together, live like this! combines the mediocrity and simplicity of building structures with clever cropping and arranging techniques. these beautiful c-prints are mounted on...

hood internet party
stills from willy wonka we went to see the hood internet for their cd release at lincoln hall. the dj to mix before hood internet came on was fantastic. i have yet to figure out who he was; i do know he was local. he mixed all his music in sync to the video that was playing. i’ll load one of my amateur recordings of a video segment, but there were just so many, i thought i would take some...

first print EVER.
so here it is. the very first print i’ve ever done. and it was awesome. i cannot wait to continue with this class. i’m officially addicted. this is definitely not the final print; next week we get to use color and hopefully by the end of next class it’ll be printed in two blocks, white on black.  cetus, 2010, woodblock print, 10”x14”

mirrored
another great example of unconventional long exposure photographs are those by tokihiro sato, justly named “breathing light.” each photograph was taken in large format. conducted during the middle of the day, sato would use extremely long exposures (perhaps a little over an hour) and a neutral density filter to capture the images. while the shutter was open, he would stand with a tiny...

cinematic
everyone has seen the pictures created by holding the shutter release at long exposure times to create light trails. every teacher i’ve had has scoffed at the classic (boring) examples of long exposures, but today in lighting fundamentals, my professor introduced a new kind of photographing for extended periods of times. hiroshi sugimoto makes long exposure photography interesting again....

michelle keim
michelle keim is a graduate student from saic who uses super long exposures to photograph industrial landscapes that hold ethereal auras. these structures, which keim refers to as “iron beauties” take on an entirely different feel through her lens, to create something aesthetically beautiful. kp

kim holtermand: minimalist photography
kim holtermand’s photography is beautiful; it’s simple, beautiful and breathtaking. her use of monochromatic color is amazing. i can’t get enough of her ghostlike imagery and symmetry visible in all her photographs. this is the kind of art i would rave about, buy and look at everyday. holtermand relies on a strong meta-narrative of similar series, making all of her photos...

new decor
i just put up two picture lines on two of my walls. easy and simple. i topped them off by hanging my collection of jars and shells with white hemp. i’m not sure if i’ll put anything else up onto the walls, maybe a few shelves. i’ve never actually decorated a room to such an extent; i’m really excited. picture frame wire: $4 for each roll (i used three), screw in wall...
