let’s be honest, we don’t really care who walks out with the win; we can all pretty much guess who is going to win before anything is actually announced. all anyone really cares about are the dresses. here’s my picks for best dressed of this year’s golden globes.
#10: helen mirren wearing badgley mischka// helen mirren never shows up looking anything less than spectacular. she has one of the classiest and most classic tastes in hollywood, and continually surprises me with her beautiful gown choices. last year, she chose an elegant black gown with a plunging neckline; the year before that, she showed up in that blue draped dress that i’m pretty sure everyone envied. this year, she chose a similarly dazzling gown. and once again, she proved that style over age wins every time. if i age half as well as helen mirren,…
#9: tilda swinton wearing jil sanders// i know a lot of people won’t agree with me on this one, but i think tilda swinton chose one of the best dresses to wear to the golden globes (although those same people are also picking my least favorite dresses and declaring them “knock-outs” as we speak). talk about minimal. there has been a lot of hype about jil sanders’ spring 2011 rtw (such as an article on minimalissimo), this dress being a direct reference to the beautiful creations that just hit the runway a few weeks ago (although in this look, a shirt was added on top instead of the ready-wear, informal t-shirt dresses presented for the spring). swinton always wears oddities, and even my mother couldn’t accept this seemingly formless creation. but i am definitely a fan. it is so simple, and so off-beat, that it becomes charming. i wouldn’t wear this dress, granted, but for tilda to take the stage time and again in the clothes that she enjoys wearing is a breath of fresh air. not only does she embrace the fresh-face, not made-up look with her hair and makeup, but she refuses to fuss with the usual drapery and glitter and showmanship of most dresses that appear on the red carpet. this dress, with slight variations in color from the top half to the skirt, is beautifully simple and draws attention (whether or not it lacks a certain shimmer.) for such a plain jane outfit, it certainly turned quite a few heads.
#8: lea michele wearing oscar de la renta// i don’t watch glee, and probably never will, but no one can deny the allure of lea michele. she isn’t watch most critics would call sexy, but lea is definitely a girl next door, and will hopefully continue to be a brilliant role model. she looked stunning tonight in her girly pink, one-shoulder dress. i know i already have a strange affection to the charm of baby pink, but this dress topped most on the red carpet. everything, down to the non-showy fabric, was spot on. when lea michele took the stage, the gown came sweeping behind her; and when they showed her periodically (normally crying over her cast mates wins) the top part of the dress was showed off. and lea was shown a lot throughout the program. this is by far one of my favorite gowns from this year’s golden globes, not to mention, she wore a beautiful shade of (darker) light pink and not too much makeup. the whole look appeared fun and light, while also casting shades of elegance and beauty.
#7: jayma mays wearing // this dress is classic. it reminds me of a twenties flapper dress, but floor length (if that makes any sense). although, with jayma mays’ hair style, she’s looking more like jessica rabbit than a roaring twenties dancer. the dress isn’t ridiculously avant-garde or anything, but does command a certain amount of attention, especially in a sea of dresses that shied away from classic black.
#6: emma stone wearing calvin klein// i haven’t made up my mind about the new, blonde emma stone (at first i got her confused with jaime pressly, and then thought wait, isn’t she in jail). regardless of the hair color (which is actually naturally blonde), emma rocked this sleek peach gown. the color is brilliant (just a few shades darker and pinker than her skin tone), and unlike anything else accompanying her on the red carpet. the beauty in the dress lies in its simple construction and stunning silhouette. every inch of this dress is perfect, and seamless as well. there isn’t anything about this dress i can complain about, not one single thing i would change. to top it all off, it’s backless. and it appears to be amazingly comfortable. emma stone has long been one of my favorite people (she isn’t afraid of who she is), so with her showing up in gowns like this, her popularity with me is continuing to rise (and i can’t deny that the blonde was a beautiful addition to the color of the dress).
#5: alexa chung (i would really like to know why there are no pictures of this online)// i’m sorry, but when do the interviewers steal the spotlight next to the nominated stars? this hardly ever happens, but we should have known that alexa would show up in something stunning. she has forever been a style icon since she appeared on the scene in america not too long ago, and continues to amaze me with every decision she makes about her wardrobe. this little red number is true to alexa chung’s personal style, and i love a non-conformist. average starlets wouldn’t be caught in a dress like this, mostly because they don’t have the outlet of showing off their cleavage or legs. but alexa wears what alexa wants (and what the rest of us want as well). i would kill to own this dress (though i have no reason to, of course). i cannot wait to see what she shows up in next, and also feel sorry for whoever she’s interviewing on the next red carpet, because she obviously outshines most of the others who bother to show up. thank god for alexa chung; there is hope in the world.
#4: julianna margulies wearing vintage ysl// this dress also references the whole minimalist trend going on it the fashion world. skipping over the glitz and glamour, julianna margulies went straight for a classic color palette on a trendy silhouette. the black bustier top contrasts sharply with the baby pink color of the skirt, causing the eye to jump back a forth. but despite its simplicity, the gown is anything but boring. and to insure a dramatic entrance, a large bow is draped around her waist. i adore the colors as well as the simple shape it creates, matched with her brown hair, this dress is fantastic, definitely scoring high on my list.
#3: anne hathaway wearing armani privé// who doesn’t love gold? and who doesn’t love a backless number? this dress, which uses ample amounts of giant sequins, but doesn’t over do it, glitters like gold (and pink and nude) and pretty much stole the show. as if the shimmer wasn’t enough, a nude panel was added for extra drama, bringing the attention to hathaway’s back. the shoulders are beautiful too, not too defined but quite pronounced all the same. she kept accessories out of the picture too, and didn’t fuss with her hair, giving the gown the right amount of attention (attention it well reserves).
#2: leighton meester wearing burberry prorsum// i’m trying to recall a time when i didn’t love what leighton meester was wearing, but i can’t think of very many at all. and this time was no exception. i mean, she has the best taste in hollywood currently, which sucks for everyone else since she’s virtually a newcomer. this dress is amazing, i can’t stop looking at it. i have serious gown ency, from the ruched sleeves to the deep slit to the pattern to the color. not to mention her clutch/bag/thing is amazing (another thing to envy) and well as he classic waves. sometimes, i just want to be her (most of the times, frankly). and i really have nothing else to add, mostly because i want to get back to staring at this dress with my undivided attention. i want i want i want.
#1: hailee steinfeld wearing prabul gurung// this me, once again, bringing biases into the equation. i don’t know a damn thing about hailee steinfeld, except that she was fantastic in true grit (which was, by far, the best movie i’ve seen since inception). she is also exceptionally beautifully for just fifteen. her arrival on the red carpet showed a huge contrast to the rough, tom-boyish character she played in the remake of the famous western. she kept it simple, and wasn’t pretending to be older than she actually is (though she looked to be at least of drinking age). which isn’t to say she didn’t look completely sophisticated. her cream floor-length gown had a very simple silhouette, but bore beautiful tactile fabrics, that helped make the dress anything but ordinary. the neckline is my favorite part, however, rising up to hailee’s neck and connecting to thick straps. not to mention her choice of accessories (a teal, stand-out clutch paired with thin silver bangles) and her sleek ponytail. if she’s choosing dresses like this at fifteen, i cannot wait to see her style chooses in the future.

i’ve never bought anything from new york and company, but i ventured in there with my mom to check out their sale. to my surprise, i scored two sleeveless shirts (one in pink, one in light blue), both excellent classic pieces to add to my wardrobe, especially for under $5 each. But i also found this awesome maxi dress for less than $15. And for me, finding a maxi dress that’s actually short enough is a big deal, seeing as i’m 5’3” and a size 2. i only had to hem it a half an inch. needless to say, i never thought i’d rock a maxi, but i’ll be rocking one tomorrow.
